The leading software solution integrating asset and business planning with urban drainage network modeling

InfoWorks 2D

InfoWorks 2D facilitates fast, accurate and detailed surface flood modeling.

Two-dimensional (2D) simulation is better suited than one-dimensional simulation (1D) for modeling flows through complex geometries (such as urban streets and buildings, road intersections and other transport infrastructure), and open ground, where either source or direction of flow is problematic to assume. In urban areas the situation is exacerbated further by the presence of sewer networks, in which flows can both enter and exit the system during flood events.

Modeling such complex flow scenarios both accurately and efficiently requires a model with both 1D and 2D engines.

InfoWorks 2D combines a number of distinctive features:

  • Analysis and prediction of potential flood extent, depth and velocity
  • Comprehensive functionality to completely model the interaction of surface and underground systems
  • Fully integrated 1D and 2D modeling environments
  • Multiple surface mesh design optimizes modeling flexibility and accuracy
  • Multiple results views, both static and animated

InfoWorks 2D is available as a fully-integrated module within InfoWorks CS for collection system modeling.

Features & Benefits

Integrated module
Features & Benefits
InfoWorks 2D module is fully integrated with existing 1D simulation engine
Achieves detailed, accurate and efficient modeling of flows through complex geometries, both urban and open ground, including interaction with sewer networks
Create 2D models within larger 1D model
By using 1D simulation to identify location of flooding, and 2D to investigate direction and depth of flood flows in specific areas, users can reduce model size and simulation time while improving accuracy of results, thereby improving productivity and reducing costs
1D and 2D simulation engines run simultaneously
Allows the exchange of water in between the models at each timestep giving improved accuracy and detail of results
All the benefits of an InfoWorks solution
Including standard model building tools, data import, validation, version control, audit trail and results display
2D fluid flow engine
Features & Benefits
Uses 2D finite volume methods to solve the shallow water flow equations
Particularly suitable for rapidly varying flood flows such as those through steep streets and road junctions and those associated with bank overtopping or breaching
Comprehensive functionality including GIS tools for creation of 2D meshes and fully animated flood maps
No need to purchase additional modules or third-party tools
Simulation Mesh
Features & Benefits
InfoWorks 2D is based on a triangular unstructured surface mesh
Gives maximum flexibility to the modeller, increases the type of flows that can be modeled and ensures that the system topography is modeled as accurately as possible
Automatic generation of unstructured triangular meshes from within InfoWorks
No need to purchase third party meshing tools
Flexible inbuilt mesh generator
Add definition to most important hydrological features to improve model accuracy
Results Interpretation
Features & Benefits
InfoWorks 2D produces water levels at the centre of each mesh cell and velocities across each of the cell faces
Improves accuracy and detail of results
Results are fully integrated with 1D engine results
Comprehensive flood modeling achieved within a single solution
Flexible results display
The combined level and results can be viewed as graphs, tables or animated, thematic flood maps with export to GIS if required
