Introduction to Infoworks ICM

InfoWorks ICM combines both river and sewer modelling. This course is aimed at anyone new to InfoWorks ICM as well as users who have experience of the Infoworks suite of software.  The Infoworks ICM software will be introduced, looking at the database management tools, the viewing tools and the model creation tools.  The attendee will create an integrated urban drainage model within Infoworks ICM combining an urban drainage model with a fluvial model.  This will be built on to give an introduction to the 2D capabilities of the Infoworks ICM software and a basic 1D-2D model will be produced.


This is a 2-day computer hands-on training course.

Teaching Method:-

Participants are guided through a series of practicals by computer hands-on training interspersed with Powerpoint presentations. 


A basic understanding of computers is required.  Some familiarity with GIS or Microsoft Office programs would be advantageous although not essential.  Understanding of urban drainage systems and/or river systems would also be helpful although not a requirement.  Familiarity with the Infoworks suite of software may also be of use.

Course Agenda:-

  • Database Functionality.

The database functionality of Infoworks ICM will be introduced and explained to the attendee.  The concept of master databases, transportable databases will be detailed.

  • Navigating the Network.

One of the key features of Infoworks ICM is the highly-customisable user interface which features a wide range of tools to view and navigate a geographical representation of model networks and data.  The attendee will gain experience of the user interface.  The ability of Infoworks ICM to allow the import of GIS layers and ground models to allow improved schematisation and in-depth analysis of the model network will also be explored.

  • Version Control and Scenarios.

 Infoworks ICM contains a number of tools which provide a significant audit trails to assist the user during the model creation process.  The database structure enables users to edit networks with a number of ‘what if’ scenarios which can be created and edited in parallel.  These tools will all be utilised as part of this training course.

  • Building a Network.

The attendee will be taken through the process of creating both an urban drainage model and a river model taking the user from a blank network to a fully integrated river and sewer network. It will cover a range of import methods as well as the fundamental elements of building a modelling network.

The format will be as follows:

  1. Building and importing an Urban Drainage Network
  2. Importing a ground model
  3. Importing Survey Data and Building a River Reach Network
  4. Building a bridge and adding ancillaries


  • Event Data.

The various types of event data and boundary data within Infoworks ICM will be explored.  Numerous event data will be used as part of the practical exercise to give the attendee an understanding of how these are set up within Infoworks ICM and how they are assigned to network objects.

  • Running a Simulation and Analysing the results.

Using the network and event data created above, the course attendee will be introduced to the model run options.  They will then run a range of simulations and be introduced to the numerous tools available for analysing the simulation results.

  • Creating a coupled 1D-2D Model.

The final part of the course will show how a 2D component can be added to an existing 1D network.  A basic 1D-2D model will be produced and simulated.  This will introduce the basic concepts of 2D modelling which are further explored in the 2D Modelling in Infoworks ICM course.
